Every Day in May: 1

And so it begins! This year's theme will be portraits of strong female literary characters. Some of them are more recent finds for me, and some of them have been kindred spirits for years. I'm really looking forward to this list.

I'll be painting each day and then uploading the previous day's painting the next morning. What that really means is that all you get for today is sketches and notes while I complete the first painting. A new painting will be posted tomorrow. Any guesses on who it will be?

As always, I encourage anyone who wants to participate to join in - it can be 31 paintings of your choice, or songs, or interpretive dances, or writing for 31 days, or anything that keeps you creative. Just make sure you try to do it every day in May.

Snowflakes

I've been crocheting up a veritable storm of snowflakes for the past month or so. Today I finally get my fishing line and turn them into ornaments! All gorgeous patterns are from Snowcatcher.

More snowy goodness to come...

21 days: faces

I know it said #draw21days, but nobody said they had to be 21 consecutive days, did they? I had a lot of fun with this one, as faces are one of my all-time favorite things to draw.

Getting back into the swing of things. At last.

21 days: owlish by design

This assignment was to use reference material to draw just the most basic elements of an owl and create a design or almost a logo from them. So in my world, Pigwidgeon, Errol, and Hedwig all get designer makeovers.

Of course this is not my first foray into owlishness. Remember this one?

21 days: Tell a visual story

Day 13's assignment is to create a visual narrative within one rectangle - no words, no speech bubbles. It should come as no surprise that this was drawn during a nice round of family D&D, but I've always had a soft spot in my heart for dragons ever since I read my first Anne McCaffrey book.

Closeup!

And day 12's assignment: iconography. Anguish, hope, curiosity, mystery.

21 days: monster-making!

I loved this assignment so much that I actually took time and scanned this one in.

For some more monstrous goodness, check out some of my favorite monsters:

21 days: SuperDoodle

Today's challenge was to fill an entire 8.5x11 paper with doodles. My kind of assignment!

21 days: shadows and headphones

I made good time on the weekend, but all this getting ready for school stuff is showing me how much I need to make drawing and painting a non-negotiable priority. I finished these on lunch break, timing myself with an episode of the Muppet Show.

For this exercise in shading and light sources, I did in fact go into the downstairs bathroom with my book light and the door closed, so that I could double-check the way the light actually appears. Did I look dumb? Who cares.

21 days: a girl and her dragon

A certain someone was very upset with me for drawing this, and will be even madder when she knows I've posted it. But this assignment is about drawing something you're passionate about. I'm passionate about storytelling, about fantasy, and about letting your imagination run wild so that you can pretend to inhabit that story. The inspiration for this drawing is from something else I'm passionate about: my daughter.

While all my kids say it doesn't look like her (and they're correct, though they do share some awesome hair), I told them that it's inspired by her, her love of dragons, and the fact that she does in fact have a staff she likes to walk with that looks just like this one.

You know that Shakespeare quote, "Though she be but little, she is fierce!" - that's my Angela.

21 days: Rocktopus

Day 6's assignment. He is either playing "Rock Lobster", "Octopus's Garden", or "I Want to Hold Your Hand Hand Hand Hand Hand Hand Hand Hand."

21 days: horse and pony show

This lesson was supposed to be about refinement: to draw a subject many times in many different styles, or to draw the same image again and again with modifications until you've arrived at a happy place with it. You could choose from the following topics: Bigfoot, your boss, a shark, a skull, a pelican, an evil space villain, or a horse. No contest here.

Embiggened!

21 days: keep your hands where I can see them

5 hands done 5 different ways. (I was going to say different flavors, but that just sounds gross.)

This way to the Ministry of Magic!

We're continuing our tradition of reading a Harry Potter book each summer, out loud, as a family. You can guess which book we're on now! I made this sign after the kids went to bed and taped it up in the appropriate spot....

Only to find an addition when I got up early the next morning (Angela's handiwork).

The text reads: CAUTION! Moaning Myrtle may appear while using the shower, bath, toilet or sink. Do not mind the constant crying if she enters your home. Sincerely - Ministry of Magic.

I love my children and their amazing creativity SO MUCH. Wonder where they got it from?

Getting back into the habit

(Just me in my mermaid suit, my pet cotton candy blue fox, and my trusty steed, a red cactus.)

So as some of you may have noticed, I get sidetracked. A LOT. I get caught up with work, and my family, and the kids, and other obligations, and then a little voice that says, "hey, you should go paint" basically gets told to shut up because I need more sleep.

I began using a new program which I just love called HabitRPG.com. It helps reinforce good habits, and help you notice when you're slacking (or when you're engaging in bad habits). It's kind of like Chore Wars except that it's much more personal. And way cuter. I've always been a sucker for 8-bit goodness. Especially when it's color coded and easy enough that I can have my kids have their own accounts too.

So what the heck does this have to do with painting? It's taken me two months,(!) but I've finally added "Studio Time" to my list of habits. And "Blog" as well. And added five entries on my to-do list that are all blog topics. Hopefully these habits will start to stick, because then will I not only actually be spending time on doing creative things for myself, I will be documenting and sharing them.

So watch this space.

Sacrifice and creativity

It's the first day of Lent today, Ash Wednesday. So to prepare, we made some Sacrifice Beads (also called Good Deed Beads) to help act as reminders to help others. Because this was sort of spur of the moment, we used what beads we had on hand - in a few cases, a fish or a heart stood in for the cross. Either way, when you do a good deed as an offering, you move a bead towards one end as an act of love.

Directions to make your own: http://thelittleways.com/how-to-make-sacrifice-beads. I promise it's not hard at all, and children can make them with just a little help and supervision.

Doodling in the new year

Over on my Facebook page I posted a link to what I thought was an awesome idea: get a free calendar and turn it into a small doodle-y journal. I can commit to that! And so could the kids. Luckily for us, our church was handing out free calendars. But oh no! What's this?

I am a Very Nice Catholic Girl, but I absolutely could not resist adding Kitten Kong to that top photo. And we're slightly giddy at the idea that I have 11 more pictures to add him to throughout the year.

Here you can see a few doodles and comments on the start of the month... and a giant kitten paw terrorizing the congregation.

My kids of course had to do it too. I swear I want this to be our holiday card next year, courtesy of Angela:

Sophie has a completely different take on it: she wants to write a story each month, and every day she will write a little more on each calendar square. By the end of the year, she'll have 12 stories!

Which may or may not contain giant adorable animals terrorizing the countryside. You never know with my kids.
